Ken Pitchford Sensei started his martial arts career on Okinawa in 1981 with the study of Shorin Ryū karate with Nagamine Shoshin Sensei. In 1982 Pitchford Sensei met Gordon Warner Sensei and started practicing Mugai Ryū. Pitchford Sensei currently holds the rank of Nanadan as awarded by the Japanese Iaido Federation. The headmaster of Mugai Ryū gave Pitchford Sensei Men No Maki, which is a traditional license and teaching certificate within the style. He has also been awarded Taikai Sho twice, an award in excellence in Iaido given at the All-Japan Iaido Taikai.
